this is the other song that i wrote it is called I Was Only A Kid Mum and Dad came out to see the final parade at Packapunyal. The sixth battalion was on the tour of duty at Nam how I know this because I was the one to draw it. We did our March though Brisbane to show the civilians how strong the Diggers are when we went on our ship to Nam we had a newspaper and what I remember from it the most was a new paper article from it saying how strong we looking with our slouch hate, SLR and greens. God help me I was only a Kid. We arrived at Nam the next thing we did was on the chinooks taking you to Nui Dat were you and your digger mates got your lockers and within a couple of hours they had Pin up girls and VB’s in them when the sun was going down when you were in the scub when it wasn’t raining you looking at the sunset thinking how beautiful it is. You could not sleep at night with the Pitch black of the jungle and the barking M-16 going off all the time. And you have a rash that kept going up and down from the jungle can you tell me what this means. God help me I was only a Kid. The Charlie was not the only problem that you diggers had it was every single step you had it would do more damage then what the Charlie did it was like a war with in yourself but you didn’t want to let your mate down so you dusted the dust off your boots and closed your eyes and thought of a better place. Somebody call out CONTACT we all dived to the side of the road and then the Charlie started shooting at us so we shot back at them it was the worst 4 hours of my life it was a Godalmighty roar from all the guns. God help me I was only a kid. My father told me the ANZACS legends story he didn’t mention about the blood and tears I didn’t believe him fully when he always told me but now I fully understand what he meant now I do understand from being in this hell of a place. We went on our daily patrol like we always did never seen any Charlie and somebody yelled CONTACT CONTACT CONTACT so we all dived to a side and we had a yank solder in on the road that didn’t dive out of the way so I went out there and rescued him. Went you went out you got shot and the medic ran out to you and the yank then the medic pulled you out and when you were safe he said to you that you were going to lose your leg. God Help Me I Was Only A Kid. You flew back on a plane and when you touched down in Australia you were suspecting a hero’s welcome back but you got nothing just people chucking food at you and spiting at you and all you could think is why would they do this to me when many of us Australian soldiers were dying overseas. God Help Me I Was Only A Kid.
