this morning I was awakened at 4:17am to odd rustling in the kitchen. 4 bandits had invaded my home; rather said, 4 baby racoons were diving in the 22 pound bag of cat food. one was upside down with feet just dangling above the bag opening while the others stood waiting to have their go. i take care of some 14 feral cats (most have been caught, fixed, shots, released), and they are mostly socialized now... at least with me. i live in the country, so i leave a way for them to get inside in case of weather although they much prefer being outside. i do so usually without fear of intruders (except for a regular possum visit.... another story for another day) lately i noticed the bowl of water i leave in the kitchen was either strewn across the floor by morning, or filthy dirty with remnants of cat food. you know racoons wash their food before eating, so now i understand the dirty water. it seems these young critters have the early smarts to figure out how to do a food raid. they are so damn cute, too, and no fear of me at all. I eased right next to them, talking gibberish while they gazed with curiosity, responding verbally as if to greet and welcome. eventually they paraded out the back door where big mama was waiting. she was nowhere as friendly. no doubt shes been teaching them her tricks. i truly love living in the country.
