today, i spent some time listening to some of the discussion on californias water crisis. for those of you who havent heard of it, i suggest you do some research, as it could easily affect our nations supply of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other crops. the issue began with the start of the drought back in 2006. ostensibly, reserve water was diverted away from farms, according to epa protocols to preserve, among other things, a type of baitfish, the smelt. the smelt in question is a sub-breed, and, by all accounts, neither endangered nor protected. in 2009, the current president refused to declare it a disaster, thereby denying extra assistance. from a non-partisan standpoint, this entire matter makes no sense to me. the possible causes of the drought aside, the decision to deny water to farms should never be made lightly. im sure every farmer in the midwest can relate, considering the drought we suffered recently... i dont know all the details yet, and im sure therere things i missed, which is why i encourage everyone who enjoys california-sourced produce of any sort to do some research, regardless of political affiliations, and possibly email a congresscritter to investigate. tis an election year, which is the perfect time to annoy your representatives into action.
