update from #dennischun As we await the presentation of the Heisman Trophy this Saturday (hopefully to Hawaiis own Marcus Mariota) dont know if you may be aware of the original Five-0 s tie to this award symbolizing the nations most outstanding college football player. Herman Wedemeyer, the original Duke Lukela, was twice in the running for this award. As a member of the Galloping Gaels of St. Marys he finished 4th in1945 and 6th in 1946 in the Heisman voting for those years.. He was also Hawaiis first consensus All-American. In 1979 he was elected into the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame. Before making Duke Lukela a popular member of the Five-0 team he had a very distinguished career in public service. He was elected first to City Council of Honolulu and then to the State Legislature. This was a mark of the special affection and respect Hawaii had and still has for Herman. He was a very special, humble, gracious and talented son of Hawaii. I was fortunate to have met him and worked with him several times. I can only hope that my own work reflects the admiration, appreciation and aloha I have for him. His memory is always with me when I am on set. Best wishes to his ohana. In closing may I also say that regardless of the outcome this Saturdays Heisman voting, Hawaii is proud of Marcus Mariota.
