Regarding Operation Mindcrime...yeah, that was our first really big breakthrough record that kind of caught on and had mass appeal. It’s strange that it’d be that record. (Laughs.) An album about a terrorist becomes a big seller. Who’d have thunk it? Of tours I’ve done in the past, the “Promised Land” tour in 1984 was a real special tour for me. It was our first experience with putting on a theatrical presentation where we had multiple sets and we had film screens with imagery that interacted with the audience. We broke down that fourth wall between the performer and the audience for the first time, and I really, really enjoyed that. ...I just want to be able to write what I feel. And I dont want to be dictated to by anyone. I dont want anyone to say, You cant do that because, fill in the blank! I dont believe in categorization or genre-fication. I think that ruins art. I think that is elitist. Art is not meant to be confined or put in a box. Its an uphill climb, because so many people want you to conform. They want you to be what they think you should be.
