was so preoccupied over the past few days making sure that my mother wasnt alone on her birthday, following one of her periodic emotional crises, that I completely overlooked the second anniversary of my old friend Charles Wrights death on August 14th. I guess thats what happens over time. We dont forget those who are gone, but the specifics of their passing start to fade. The anniversaries go by without a moments thought. When we do remember, its usually, hopefully, a good memory. I found myself thinking of Charles today because somebody posted a clip of Hawkwind playing Silver Machine - and I suddenly remembered the 17 year old Charles being inspired by the line It flies sideways through time to write one of his more arcane short stories, a surreal, punchy, and typically bleak piece about a time-traveler adrift in the multiverse, which I tried to adapt into comic strip form, only to be defeated by the complicated visual requirements and the fact that I cant draw for shit. It never got published anywhere, either in prose or in comics-adapted form, and I have no clue what happened to the story / script, or the no doubt ropey artwork I produced for it. Probably rotting in a drawer somewhere at my Mums... Anyway, this ones for him...
