well I almost made it all day before I heard the heartbreaking news... my friend Doug Lathrop has slipped the eternal coil and left us. He was born with many problems and grew to embrace if not actively conquer them with an almost bravado like aplomb. One day, long ago we ( amy and I) announced on friendster I think, that we were going too vegas to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary. It wasnt so much as an invite as it was a sort of mater of fact, this is what we were doing. Well I get a call from Doug, hey man, what flight are you guys on... I got a ticket an Im going to meet you guys in Vegas. This was a man who was for the most part trapped in a wheel chair. It was a monumental task for him to book a flight and even get to an airport much less spend the weekend in vegas, partying and raging with his friends. But he did and it was awesome. He was a great man, and he was a good friend and we will all miss him, in oner small way or another. Even if its only that now theres not that little dude trying to make his way through the crowd in his electric wheelchair, pushing up against you because you are too drunk or just not paying attention... even if thats all we get from this, understand that this is not a good thing, and because of this, he will be missed. He was at the bar, at the punk rock show, at the tiki oasis, he was always involved in whatever was happening and going off and he was always a part of that. I know he beat the odds by maybe 3 times his given lifespan, but I will miss him immensely. Go in peace Doug, you are loved and you are missed. San Diego will not be the same without you.
