went back to Lupin Lodge, a nudist camp in the Los Gatos Hills. hadnt been there since the 80s when i did a story on it for KRON NBC. nestled in the beautiful wooded hills near the Lexington reservoir, Lupin Lodge is a 110 acre camp with yurts and trailers housing some 40-60 people depending on the season. its tranquil and the residents are really nice and sort of quirky. storyline: theyre running out of water because of the drought. wells are drying up, its springs and creeks are tapering off. a huge water tank and a large swimming pool have to be maintained because the fire dept has deemed it a fire base in the event of a wildfire, they need their water. so, theyre caught between a rock and a hard place. months ago, they connected a water hose to a waterfall on their adjacent property and siphoned water for their tank and pool. last week, state rangers came and ripped the hoses apart, saying they were trespassing on state open space land and stealing public water. the property is owned by the Mid Peninsula Open Space District, which bought the land (including the waterfall) from a fella named Sal Carilli. he told me today, he always shared the water with Lupin Lodge and cant understand why the state now refuses to share the water. He said he should have included that requirement in the sale but never thought the Mid Pen people would discontinue that good neighbor policy. no callback from Mid Pen today ... but it does seem so unreal. that water from a creek beneath the waterfall is going into the ground. no one is using it so why not let Lupin Lodge have some of it? it is for a good cause ... water for the residents who now have to truck all its water in daily at a big cost and also water for firefighters to battle wildfires. remember the Lexington fire of 1985? that burned tens of thousands of acres there.. Lupin Lodges water tank and pool were a firebase at that time as well. so ... is this bureacracy at work? or just bad neighbor policy? by the way ... the camp is clothing optional FYI.
