went to see the new planet of the apes movie tonight. it was slightly entertaining, but having lived through all the original releases, this one with all its extravagant effects left me breathing normally, not at all breathless. but its always nice to go to the movies. every outing doesnt have to be a stanley kubrick masterpiece. on the way back to the car, there was a live band playing in the outdoor patio of one of the restaurants there at cerritos town center. didi and i were both pleasantly surprised at the quality of musicianship. we poked our heads into the patio. didnt recognize a single guy, but they were all obviously well seasoned players. they were in the middle of the marvin gaye tune, mercy mercy me. the singer was doing some surprisingly edgy and skillful improvising. the guitarist took a very nicely composed solo, and the keyboard player was playing some really nice modal voicings. the level of skill and exploration in that patio nearly made up for the predictability and gratuity of the movie. tomorrow i play in falbrook with elaine tubinis and alan mautner, and on sunday (didi and my 37th wedding anniversary) i play with tim emmons and ron berman for kenton youngstroms daughters wedding in malibu at calimigos ranch. and on monday my new band will rehearse a new john crespo tune called monkey on my back, a new brett gollin tune with a long spanish title i cant remember, and two new tunes of mine: stop texting and dance, and lightning in a bottle. its wonderful to have jobs and projects to look forward to. its so nice to be creatively involved with my various buddies, co-mounting a nice variety of undertakings. for me, NOT having something to do is the kiss of death. when theres no art going on, im crawling the walls and pacing the floors...at the same time. so this is a great summer. i hope some of you can come out and see us at la floridita on august 29th. the rehearsals are sounding very cool.
