what if the benefactor desires a certain direction...patients who might plausibly wonder if their medical care is in any way influenced by the institution’s fealty to the donors. As I read this very thoughtful article and as a physician, I believe that it is critical that a donor not be allowed to interfere in the practice of medicine, even if the name of the institution is changed. This article makes me reflect on what is happening in our country with the take over of hospital networks by Catholic policies orchestrated by bishops, who are putting women at risk by denying them access to services that are available at other hospitals. I am a Catholic and I see no practical or theological reason for the Catholic Church to be opposed to artificial contraception and sterilization. The Catholic Church is only one church and yet it is being given great power to impose its beliefs on everyone, with the benefit of our taxpayer dollars. The Catholic Church does good and bad. Do we as a nation want to have hospitals that are controlled by a certain ethical viewpoint, which limits legitimate care that can be given to patients? This is a question that we must ask, since the lives of patients can be at risk. Sincerely, Dr Rosemary Eileen McHugh, M.D., M.B.A., M.Spir.
