with Halloween coming on I think that we should have some stories that have happened to us while walking the roads of Campbell County. It was probably about 1960 and I had sold my car and moved to Baltimore, Maryland. Things did not work out for me so I returned to Tennessee. After getting back of course I had no car so I had to walk to visit my girlfriend. She lived Duff,Tn. This particular night it was very dark and if I had not known the road I wouldve certainly gotten lost. It was funny during the whole walk home there was not one single car going in either direction. So you can imagine without traffic lights and no porch lights on the houses it was quite scary. I did fine until I got just below the big brick church. Years earlier there had been a young man that was shot and killed on the road. Well leave it to me I misjudged a curve and all of a sudden I came to a complete stop. Having that incident of the murder in my mind I said to myself somebody has me. The funny part is that I had walked into a mailbox belonging to James Smith. I can tell you that I was definitely scared. It wasnt long until I went to work and made sure that I had a car as I did not feel I wanted to walk those roads again on a very dark night. harry vann petree.
