Tuna forum gets funding boost Source: The National, Tuesday August 20th, 2013 By SHIRLEY MAULUDU NATIONAL Fisheries Authority (NFA) has received K240,000, boosting the fund for holding of the Pacific tuna forum in Honiara next month. NFA managing director Sylvester Pokajam thanked the donor-sponsors last Friday, saying the Pacific countries produced about 50% of the world’s tuna. He said with PNG’s participation in the forum, it would put the country on the map for investment and economic benefits. The sponsors included Fair Well Fisheries (PNG) Ltd, PNG Fishing Industry Association (FIA) and RD-PNG Group who chipped in K40,000 each. Other sponsors included Korea Overseas Fisheries Association (KOFA) and International Food Corporation Ltd, who gave K20,000 each. South Seas Tuna Corporation, Majestic Seafood Corporation Ltd and Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) based in Masrshall Island, gaved K15,000 each. Nambawan Seafood Corporation and Fish Tech (PNG) Ltd and an organisation in Lae donated, K10,000 each. Tatiduh Seafoods Managements Ltd donated K5,000. “Out of the Pacific Island countries, half of the Pacific tuna comes from PNG. This creates 50,000 to 100,000 direct employment in our country,” Pokajam said. Pokajam said the sponsorship would be used to cover the travel cost of the PNG delegation to Honiara. The Honiara forum will be held on Sept 18-19.
