yesterdays tremor should not surprise surigaonons. we should even welcome it as it only shows that the two earthquake faults along the west and east coasts of the province are active. this is what i learned from phivolcs in a symposium which i attended in 1995. in that forum which the late dr raymundo punongbayan attended, he said that that 1991 quake in dagupan city which killed many pinoys happened in a location which did not experience any quakes for a long, long time. he explained that the pressure inside it was bursting already. hence these occasional shakes are natures way of releasing the pent up pressures inside the earth just as boils do in our skin. two earthquake faults? yes, there are two. one is located along the west coast that is in malimono which was yesterdays quake epicenter. the other one is in the east which is also active. its usual epicenter is burgos in siargao island. as a matter of fact , there were actually two shakes yesterday- the 1:30 PM in malimono with a magnitude intensity of 5.4 (4.5 in surigao city, 3.0 in butuan city) and later on around 2PM in burgos of lesser intensity . now in that symposium, punongbayan said that these faults are constantly moving that he quipped that if one would like to go to indonesia, he should stay in malimono and if going to taiwan, to stay in burgos. of course, he further elucidated that all these will happen in 20 million years time. heres more. the former city planning and development officer, engr adelo ensomo , in a monday forum at dbp surigao, said surigao city also experiences at least four tremors DAILY but most of them are imperceptible that require a seismograph to record them. in the meantime, a lpa is about to enter par tonight or early tomorrow morning. it is forecast to enter through the caraga region. surigaonons are enjoined to pray.
