WHERE did all the METAL go, only to be replaced with how low can I tune my guitar? and how many chug-chug-bounce-house riffs can I play to get kids windmilling around like decapitated chickens? It seems like forever ago when bands were more focused on really expressing themselves and the art: conjuring up clever lyrical themes and epic concept albums, sticking true to the roots of metal, instead of creating these screamo-pop/hippie-angstcore subgenres where people have to make sure theyre wearing the most fly designer/coolie band logo apparel and make sure their skinny jeans are the tightest... or they arent fitting in or whatever. I mean cmon! Metal is supposed to be an epic, somewhat nerdy, anti-conformist genre and youre trying to make it in or cool to get into? No. You can take your flowery music to the nearest Burger King play pen. Metal was crafted from the blood and sweat of a long standing lineage of great heroes & legends, and to deny paying homage while calling yourself metal is heresy. When it comes to actually defining what is and isnt metal, ask yourself questions like What would Hanneman or Dimebag think of this? or What would any member of Carcass, LoG or even Converge or Cro-Mags have to say about that? If you can picture getting a negative response from any one of those, then its safe to say youre moving in a non-Metal direction. But of course youd get a pat on the back from members of todays metalcore scene for sounding just like everyone else. So in a sense youre conforming to a set of rules even though the music that you THINK youre playing is rebellious raghh-ragghh music. So theres the clincher right there: do you want to make metal music to be popular like everyone else? Or do you write metal music to express yourselves regardless of what everyone else is doing? Bands like The Showdown died in the crisis of emo-screamocore, and even today the voices of Metal are being drowned out by the sheer numbers of these electro-post-__core bands. If youre going to be making metal, do it RIGHT, and make sure you dont repeat mistakes of the past (and present). Honor the past, and keep the legends alive. Thats all Ive got to say anymore. \m/
