When asked about the pay difference between Santa Rosa and surrounding area law enforcement agencies he responded with this, “The difference between the pay in the surrounding areas is the risk premium that they take leaving a safer environment and going to a more hostile environment.” Listen to the dispatch recording here Mr. Melvin, Im sure Mr. Hough would disagree with you about how much safer Santa Rosa is to work in than Okaloosa. Maybe you should talk to Roman Jackson about safe he felt when he was ambushed and shot responding to a routine call. Ask Sgt. Welch how safe he felt when he got into a shooting in front of the sheriff’s office with a suspected kidnapper. Ask Sgt. Reaves and the Santa Rosa CI K9 officer how safe they felt when taking rounds from a suspect and being pinned down in the woods for over an hour. Ask Dep. Aloy how safe he felt when he was brutally attacked after stopping a reckless driver and his injuries eventually forced him to retire. I could go on and on! The reason Santa Rosa is a safe place to live is because of the men and women who strap on those vests and put themselves is harm’s way. A large portion of violent crime is committed by a very small percentage of the population. So far weve been successful at containing that population of offenders. If you don’t want to give a raise just say that, but don’t insult the brave men and women who go to work every day to keep Santa Rosa a safe place to live.
