This song You and I by Rick James is one of the most soulful songs, full of Funk and energy ever. I absolutely love this song and it is my Rick James favorite! A classic from the Disco era! I dare say some of my gospel compositions are influenced by secular artists. For fast songs, I draw inspiration from cover hits in the Funk, Soul, Pop, Rock, Calypso and Reggae genres. For slow songs I go to the classical composers especially Mozart and Johann Strauss. I also learn dynamics and song structure from the Classics. Acappella groups that have influenced my style include: Straight Company, Acappella, AVB, Rhythm and News, Ladysmith Black Mambazzo, Fairfield Four, and Tonic Sol Fa. I also love to put a positive and spiritual spin to well known cover songs. As Bob Marley said in one of his songs: One good thing about music, when it hits, you feel no pain.
