Matki ówczesnych panien młodych odprowadzały córki na ceremonię zaślubin niosąc pochodnie, daidouxein, które miały chronić pochód ślubny przed złymi duchami. Teoria niezła, ale wydaje się nie mieć wiele wspólnego z nieodwzajemnioną miłością. Być może trochę więcej wspólnego z powiedzeniem ma Hymen, grecki bóg małżeństwa, często przedstawiany z pochodnią w ręku. A to jedna z najsłynniejszych torch songs - Lili Marlene w rzadko słyszanej, angielskiej wersji ENG: On an evening like this, all you feel like doing is to get into bed and put some wistful song on. Such songs are known as torch songs and their name originates from the saying to carry a torch for someone-to experience unrequited love. The origin of the torch motive in the saying is unclear, however, there is an interesting theory according to which, the motive is a reference to the wedding tradition of the Ancient Greece. During the wedding processions of that time, brides mothers used to carry torches, daidouxein, which were supposed to ward off evil spirits. This theory is quite appealing, but it seems to have little to do with unrequited love. What seems to have more to do with the issue, however, is the representation of the Greek god of marriage, Hymen, often portrayed with a torch in his hand.
