Ø There are over 160 open-admission No Kill shelters across the nation proving that roughly 95% of animals entering shelters are savable. These shelters range in demographics from north to south, east to west, rich to poor, urban to rural Ø In 2012, more than one new community per week crossed the No Kill threshold Ø No Kill success can be achieved due to rigorous implementation of the No Kill Equation and most importantly, having a shelter director that is dedicated and committed to the No Kill model and philosophy Ø Animal sheltering is a business and it is the strategies of the shelter that have been failing for decades Ø Many communities have already proven that a No Kill animal control is: o Cost-effective o Fiscally responsible o Saves municipalities expenses associated with killing o Brings badly needed revenues into public coffers and community businesses Ø We debunked the myths of: o Pet overpopulation o The “irresponsible” public o Spay/neuter is the “only” answer o Open-admission shelters cannot be No Kill o There are not enough homes § In Maricopa County, 220,000 homes are looking to adopt annually Ø Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) shelter director refuses to take killing off the table and continues to blatantly waste tax payer dollars to needlessly kill animals Ø MCACC has a per capita intake rate of 11 animals per 1,000 people, which is below the national average Ø MCACC has a system that is capable of producing no more than around 27,000 live outcomes per year. Which means: o Shelter killing only fluctuates when intake number fluctuates § If intake goes up, killing goes up § If intake goes down, killing goes down Ø Comparing to successful No Kill communities, MCACC should be o Adopting out 90,992 animals a year, which is more than total impounds o Returning 40,838 animals a year, which is almost total impounds Ø Not all animals entering shelters needs a new home.
