“Блук” (Blook) — is an experimental duo of self-taught music composer Oleg Shpudeiko (Heinali) and contemporary classical composer Alexey Shmurak. The duo, in parity as composers, as performers is divided by responsibilities, Alexey taking hold of keyboards and piano, and Oleg working with electronics. Decision to form a new project was taken after the results of duo’s collaborative act "Symphony of Machines". Both composers belong to the same generation (Oleg and Alexey born 1985 and 1986, respectively) and both built their musical careers in Kiev. Thought their background differs dramatically. Alexey experienced academic music education (since 1993, which finally resulted in graduation from Kiev Conservatory, faculty of composition). Until recently he has been working exclusively in the field of contemporary classical music (co-founder of the principal ensemble of Ukrainian contemporary chamber scene — Ensemble Nostri Tempris, co-founder of the leading independent music festival of similar thematics — “Gulfstream”; continues to work actively in both structures). Alexey successively extended his field of activity by the means of interdisciplinary projects (collaborations with poets, including Andrukhovich, Zhadan and Izdryk, with artists, including Myroslav Vayda, and even fashion designers). Oleg, on the other hand, started his first music experiments in 2003, composing under “Heinali” moniker. Self-taught, without any formal music education to this day, laid his path through the projects of amateur music scene. Heinali’s stylistically eclectic, yet in general interested in eletroacoustic music. Joined Soloma art group in 2009 and wrote music for audiovisual installations “Traces on the Snow” and “Aero”. His debut album “67 Breaths” was released in 2011 on Arlen, followed by “Air” on Fluttery Records in 2012. In the same year two collaborative albums “Conjoined” and “Ain’t No Night” were released on Paradigms Recordings with American poet Matt Finney. Together with Matt Oleg composed music for the opening of Olga Pischanskaya photo exhibition “Dreamcatcher”. His live shows generally include electroacoustic and piano improvisations. The name “Blook” refers to three quite simple associations. In international, English speaking context, Blook is a printed book that contains or is based on content from a blog. In post-soviet context Blook is a planet from Kir Bulychev’s sci-fi world, inhabited with humanoids known for their huge ears. Finally, in Ukraine, “Blook” is associated with the verb “блукати” (blukaty, to wander, to roam). Perhaps these three metaphors reflect almost perfectly the directions of participant’s collaborative interests. “Blook” project is, first of all, a clear, in terms of structure and image, music, with refined timbral, melodic and harmonic work. Not abandoning the genre and style connotations, “Blook” concentrates in listening to the sound, bringing out as emotionally rich palette as possible. This is achieved by contribution of balanced mix of the virtuosic and coloristic, the experimental and precise in keyboard-piano performance and live electronics. “Blook” plans to focus joint efforts not only in the areas of music (sound), but also in all directions of interdisciplinary collaborations — audiovisual, performance, spoken word and others. https://soundcloud/blook-project
