The statement also denounced the “double standards of the European and American mediators, who did not pay attention to the crimes committed against Egyptian Christians. The statement called for the enforcement of the rule of law and prosecution of the perpetrators and instigators of violence, and not to resort to the shameful customary reconciliation meetings. The statement warned of terrorist attacks after breaking up the two Brotherhood hotbeds in Rabaa el-Adaweya and Nahda squares, and called for “urgent action to protect Egyptians and stop the campaigns of incitement against citizens on the basis of religion.” The statement also called on the Ministry of Interior to perform its duties in protecting Christian citizens and intensify its security presence around houses of worship. The statement demanded imposition of the rule of law and called on the relevant agencies to prosecute perpetrators and instigators of violence and bring them to trial. The statement stressed that “since the second wave of the Egyptian Revolution on June 30, 2013 overthrew the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood, attempts have started to punish Christian citizens for their participation in this revolutionary wave, dividing the Egyptian people, and provoking hatred among its components.” “Over only one month, the guerrilla groups of the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafists attacked Egyptian Christians in several villages, cities and provinces. In these attacks, many Christian citizens were killed and their churches, homes, shops and cars were burned and looted. They were terrorized with their children and displaced from their homes,” the statement pointed out. The statement condemned “these criminal acts by the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafists who live on dissemination of hatred and religious and sectarian intolerance, and who are working on creating hotbeds of conflict in different parts of Egypt in order to destabilize, divide, and weaken the state.” It also condemned the police failure, which amounts to complicity, in facing these sectarian attacks, as their performance has been slow and they failed to carry out the roles provided for by the law. The statement denounced the failure of the police to intervene to protect citizens and their property in spite of their prior knowledge of tension and their presence in locations of events during the attacks. The statements denounced the media blackout on the sectarian incidents in Upper Egypt. Among the signatories of the statement were the Socialist Popular Alliance Party, the National Union for Independence of Legal Profession, the New Woman Foundation, the Coptic Solidarity and the Egyptian Center for Human Rights. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ mcndirect/showsubject.aspx?id=48218 MCN Beni Ahmed Copts accept reconciliation meeting out of fear Minya (Upper Egypt), 10 August /MCN/ Ishak Fanous Abdel Malak, a Copt from Beni Ahmed el-Sharqiya village, Minya (Upper Egypt), which witnessed attacks on homes, shops and property of Copts on Saturday, said they were forced to accept the “customary reconciliation meetings” out of fear of repeated attacks. Abdel Malak pointed out that there is constant incitement against Copts by Muslims in the village. These Muslims summoned militants from neighboring villages and Palace Square, the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood’s sit-in in Minya City. Abdel Malak told MCN that Gamaa Islamiya put pressure on Copts in the village to accept the “reconciliation”, claiming there is no other options for the affected Copts. The Copts accepted the reconciliation out of fear of repeated attacks, especially as the security services are prejudiced. He pointed out that a preliminary meeting would be held today among a number of Copts and Muslims of the village as well as Gamaa Islamiya. The security services will provide security during the meeting. The final meeting would be held on Sunday in the presence of Maj. Gen. Osama Deif, secretary-general of the Minya province, Maj. Gen. Abdel Aziz Abu Qoura, director of Minya security, Maj. Gen. Ali Sultan, director of the criminal investigation department, a number of church leaders, and heads of senior Muslim and Coptic families in the village. Beni Ahmed el-Sharqiya village, Minya, witnessed attacks on Copts last Saturday, in which militants from 7 neighboring villages participated. The attacks resulted in the burning and looting of 8 houses, 24 shops and 9 cars all owned by Coptic residents of the village. This attack is a part of a series of attacks on Copts since the ouster of Mohamed Morsi on July 3. It is worth mentioning that holding the “customary reconciliation meetings” is a technique that has been used by the state in dealing with attacks on Copts in complete absence of the law. Coptic human rights activists have repeatedly refused these meetings because they deny the rights of Copts and provide impunity for perpetrators. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ copts-united/English/Details.php?I=918&A=10843 COPTS UNITED 12 AUGUST 2013 Islamic groups send supporters to pick a quarrel with Copts of “Kodia al-Nasara” By-Abul Ezz Tawfik | 12 August 2013 Islamic groups in Kodia al-Nasara village, Dirout, have sent their supporters to provoke the Copts of the village and pick a quarrel with them in order to have a chance to attack the Copts and their properties as well. It’s worth mentioning that the Copts have been receiving many threats and are being asked to pay royalties to the Islamists since former Islamic president Mohamed Morsy was ousted. Yet, the police are not willing to intervene and arrest those thugs. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ copts-united/English/Details.php?I=918&A=10841 COPTS UNITED Copts of Beni Ahmad village have to trade their rights for peace By-Youssef El Bebawy | 12 August 2013 In a customary reconciliation session, the Islamic group in Minya forced the Copts of Beni Ahmed village to wavier their rights in order to be allowed to live in peace in the village. It was decided in the session that repeating the attacks, the attacker should pay 2 million EGP and will have to abandon the village. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ mcndirect/showsubject.aspx?id=48229 MCN Egyptian Democratic Solidarity demands Sisi address attacks on Copts Cairo, 10 August /MCN/ The Egyptian Democratic Solidarity called on Defense Minister Col. Gen. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi not to deal with attacks on Copts as sectarian incidents. They added, “it is in essence a message sent by Muslim Brotherhood perpetrators, that the current national situation isn’t better than the MB’s reign. Thus, it is imperative to deal with these attacks firmly, as incidents of violence rather than sectarianism.” In a statement addressed to Sisi, it said, “we demand the dissolving of all religious parties immediately; as it’s consistent with suspending the corrupt constitution, to give way for eliminating the main target in this war against Egypt, since the MB has sought allies amongst various other religious parties to aid it.” It called to declare the MB a terrorist group, which would also enable the dismantling of its bases and cadres, describing the notions of reconciliation as lies, as they would only utilize it to regain control of the country.” It also called for both sit-ins at Rabaa El-Adaweya and Nahda squares to be broken up, by methods provided by the law, and called for refraining completely from receiving Western diplomats until that has happened. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ copts-united/English/Details.php?I=918&A=10840 COPTS UNITED A Copt is kidnapped at gunpoint in Luxor By-Abul Ezz Tawfik | 12 August 2013 Unknown armed men have kidnapped a Coptic man called Mamdouh M. Naguib in Luxor. He was kidnapped while driving home for ransom. Police were reported and the matter is under investigation. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ mcndirect/showsubject.aspx?id=48254 MCN Calls for Cairo march on Wednesday to demand end to attacks on Copts Cairo, 11 August /MCN/ - by Nader Shukri Coptic activists called for a march next Wednesday from Dawran Shubra to the radio and television building in Cairo to demand the state end the repeated attacks on Copts by Islamists. This includes the events that took place Sunday in Diabiya village, Beni Suef, and resulted in the burning of eight houses, a shop and the village’s church. Rami Kamel, representative of the Coptic Youth Front, said the situation is alarming in light of threats and systematic attacks against Copts by Islamic movements that target the lives and property of Copts amid the silence of the state, which does not address the situation except through customary reconciliation meetings. Therefore, the march aims to support the legitimate demands to protect Copts and stop the systematic violence against them. In a related context, Andrew Aweidah, coordinator of the Maspero Youth Union, stressed that Copts after June 30 are paying the price for the revolution as organized attacks are launched against them and the state remains silent. They deal slowly and neglectfully with Coptic issues through continued shameful meetings that contribute to the increase of violent incidents against Copts. It is worth mentioning that Copts have been facing a campaign of violent attacks since the dismissal of President Mohamed Morsi. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ mcndirect/showsubject.aspx?id=48257 MCN ECDSHR warns of recurring attacks on Copts Cairo, 11 August /MCN/ The Egyptian Center for Development Studies and Human Rights (ECDSHR), interested in Coptic affairs, denounced the repeated attacks on Coptic churches in Egypt during the current political transition. ECDSHR warned of the recurrence of such incidents, which are used by instigators to undermine the national structure of the Egyptian people, in an attempt to fabricate strife and ignite a civil war in Egypt. The center highlighted the most recent events of Beni Suef, Port Said and Minya, calling on the Egyptian army and its leadership to protect Egyptian churches, in collaboration with the interior ministry and the support of the Egyptian people. “We always regret what is happening to Copts in Egypt as a result of any political conflicts or tribal differences and wish that Christians and their churches do not always fall within the circle of revenge in any political or criminal accident, as what happened in the bombings of the Two Saints Church and what we see of current events,” the center said in a statement released today. “All this indicates the weakness of the state. We are now in the process of building a state of law, so we blame the Interior Ministry, which has always failed to arrest any aggressor against the Church, and under the former regime prepared distractions and lackluster investigations; but now they are blatant and there are neither defendants nor investigations.” ******************************* DR.
