During a joint rally with Turkish PM, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in Diyarbakır, the leader of the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government, Masoud Barzani, has lent his full support to the Turkish government’s peace bid. “Today is a historical day and a dream come true that we gather in our beloved Diyarbakir,” Barzani said. “Today is the day of brotherhood, coexistence and tolerance.” In a speech to crowd of tens of thousands, the Kurdish president said that peace must be achieved in Turkey no matter how long it may take. Barzani applauded Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan for starting “A daring path to peace” and he urged all Kurds to support the process. “I will never quit on peace,” Erdogan said. “Our party faced many problems and challenges, but we will continue on our path and bring about brotherhood.” More than 15 million Kurds live in Turkey today, but they are deprived of many cultural and political rights. Prime Minister Erdogan has tried to change old laws and give the Kurds and other minorities their rights, most notably through a ‘democracy package’ he launched in September. For his part, PM Erdogan tried to address the Kurdish concern by using the word ‘Kurdistan’ publicly for the first time and saying, “No one is a second class citizen in Turkey,”
