البيت الفلسطيني Defining the Arab-Canadian Identity Phase 2 When: November 8th, 2013 Where: Palestine House (3195 Erindale Station Rd, Mississauga) Time: 7:00- 9:00 PM On Oct 10th, 2013 a discussion exploring the issue of identity specifically the Arab- Canadian Identity (as per the below announcement) was initiated, we would like to now invite you to join us for the follow-up session which will tackle the issue of identity from another angle going back to the original creation and development of Palestinian, Arab, National identity. Due to the sharp historical changes in the Arab region it is important to look closely on how the social and political changes have influenced the construction of the different identities and due to the state of exile and refuge that most of the Palestinians are living in Suggested discussion points: - How does the Canadian – Arab identity issue/ crises affects the Palestinian struggle - What is our role as an Arab/ Palestinian – Canadian in the social and political issues in Canada The discussion will be presented by Mr. Issam Al-Yamani a prominent Palestinian activist who was born and raised in a refugee camp in Lebanon. Discussion phase 1: Canada has long prided itself through its cultural mosaic, the celebration of a number of identities coming together under one nation. Over the past decade, the geopolitical nature of the Arab world has added a number of dimensions to the already complicated identity crisis of Arab-Canadians. This crisis is far too complex to be resolved simply through hyphenation or citizenship. The new generation of Arabs in Canada find themselves carrying the burden of stereotypes and a cause that is much larger than any single person. Issues such as occupation, exile, Islamophobia, sectarianism and racism tend to linger over the Arab identity. Throughout history, Arabs have been told how to identify themselves, what to believe in and how to act, the onus of shaping this identity lies on the shoulders of the new generation. The Palestine House, along with the Canadian Arab Federation, invites you to discuss the identity crisis of Arab Canadians. Proposed Discussion Points: 1) Have you ever faced difficulties as an Arab in Canada? 2) What can we do, as a minority, to ensure we are a positive element in the Canadian society as large? 3) What determinants are most used when defining your own personal identity (Citizenship, Religion, Ethnicity, Nationality)?
