خطبة اسباب الخشوع في الصلاة *Purposes/motivations To be Humble during Prayer Praise be to Allah, we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. Dear Brothers and sisters: There are Varity of ways for a servant to be humble during their salah (prayers), amongst these ways or motivations that bring the humbleness and increase it are: 1. To prepare for the prayer, and that’s by first preforming proper wudu and to say the athkar before and after it, repeating the Adhan after the muezzin, and saying the proper supplication (dua’aa) after it, making supplications between the adhan and iqaamah, to wear clean and legit clothing and straighten the rows while praying. These help and increase in a servant to be humble during the salah (prayer). 2. Tranquility/peacefulness during the prayer: where indeed the prophet peace be upon him used to be tranquil during all his prayers. 3. To remember Death during the prayer for indeed it makes the servant to preform the prayer as it’s going to be his last prayer. 4. To be humble during the prayers, you must reflect on the verses that’s being recited and saying the rest of the athkar al salah. Allah, may he be exalted says ((“And those who, when reminded of the verses of their Lord, do not fall upon them deaf and blind.”)) [Al-Furqan: verse 73] It is narrated from Abu Huraira that: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ((Say Amin when the Imam says it and if the Amin of any one of you coincides with that of the angels then all his past sins will be forgiven. Ibn Shihab said, Allahs Messenger (peace be upon him) used to Say Amin.))….. And also the prophet (peace be upon him ) said: ((When the Imam says: (Sami Allahu liman hamidah) Allah listens to those who praise Him. Then (all of you) say: (Rabbana wa lakal-hamd) O our Lord! And to You is the praise for whoevers saying concurs with the saying of the angels, then his past sins will be forgiven.)) 5. To recite the Quran verse by verse, which leads you to reflect on the verses. 6. To beautify the Quran slowly and distinctly with your voices. Allah, may he be exalted says ((“and recite the Quran with measured recitation.”)) [Al-Muzzammil: verse 4] and also It was narrated that Abu Bara said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ((Make your voices beautiful when you recite Quran.)) 7. To acknowledge that Allah responds to the servants during the prayers. Abu Huraira reported: The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: If anyone observes prayer in which he does not recite Umm al-Quran, It is deficient [he said this three times] and not complete. It was said to Abu Huraira: At times we are behind the Imam. He said: Recite it inwardly, for he had heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) declare that Allah the Exalted had said: I have divided the prayer into two halves between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks. When the servant says: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the universe, Allah the Most High says: My servant has praised Me. And when he (the servant) says: The Most Compassionate, the Merciful, Allah the Most High says: My servant has lauded Me. And when he (the servant) says: Master of the Day of judg- ment, He remarks: My servant has glorified Me. and sometimes He would say: My servant entrusted (his affairs) to Me. And when he (the worshipper) says: Thee do we worship and of Thee do we ask help, He (Allah) says: This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. Then, when he (the worshipper) says: Guide us to the straight path, the path of those to whom Thou hast been Gracious not of those who have incurred Thy displeasure, nor of those who have gone astray, He (Allah) says: This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. 8. If you were to pray, to put a sutrah front of you. For indeed it was narrated that Sahl bin Abi Hathmah said: the prophet (peace be upon him) said: ((When anyone of you prays toward a Sutra, let him get close to it and not allow the Shaitan to interrupt his prayer for him.)) 9. While standing during the prayer, to place the right hand on top of the left hand, for indeed the prophet peace be upon him used to put his right hand on top of his left on his chest. 10. To look to the spot when you prostrate. Where Aisha (may allah be please with her) said that when the prophet peace be upon him prays, he would lower his head and look to where he prostrate. And look at his finger that points during the tashahud. For that finger pointing reminds the servant of the only one, Almighty Allah. 11. To recite different surat from the Quran and athkar. Where the servant would reflect on the words of Allah, which makes them humble during the prayers. 12. That you must preform prostration when you recite ayat al sajdah (prostration). Allah, may he be exalted says ((“And they fall upon their faces weeping, and the Quran increases them in humble submission.”)) and also said ((“When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping.”)) It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ((“When a son of Adam recites a Sajdah* and prostrates, Satan withdraws weeping, saying: ‘Woe is me! The son of Adam was commanded to prostrate and he prostrated, and Paradise will be his; I was commanded to prostrate and I refused, so I am doomed to Hell.’”)) 13. That a servant should seek refugee in Allah from the accursed devil for indeed he is our enemy during the prayers. The devil will try to distract the servant while praying and brings thoughts that will take the attention of the servant from his salah. Allah, may he be exalted says ((“Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak.”)) [Al-Nisa:verse 76] 14. To acknowledge how the companions of the prophet peace be upon him used to pray. Ali bin Ali Talib would shake and his face would change colors during his prayers while others, their eyes wont stop tearing till their beards gets all wet. 15. That you must acknowledge of virtue of being humble during the salah. Amr b Said b al-As reported: I was, with Uthman that he called for ablution water and said: I heard Allahs Messenger (peace be upon him) say: ((“When the time for a prescribed prayer comes, if any Muslim perform ablution well and offers his prayer) with humility and bowing, it will be an expiation for his past sins, so long as he has not committed a major sin; and this applies to for all times.”)) 16. To take an effort to make supplications during the prayers especially during prostration. Almighty Allah says ((“Call upon your Lord in humility and privately”)) Also, Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, ((A slave becomes nearest to his Lord when he is in prostration. So increase supplications while prostrating.)) 17. To say the athkar after the prayers. For it proofs that a servant is being humble. Dear Brothers and Sisters: during prayers, you should avoid any thoughts or acts where it will distract you in your prayers. * To remove anything that will distract you in your prayer. Narrated Anas: Aisha had a thick curtain (having pictures on it) and she screened the side of her house with it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to her, ((Remove it from my sight, for its pictures are still coming to my mind in my prayers.)) *Not to pray while wearing clothes which has designs or markings over it. Because Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood for prayer with a garment, which had designs over it. He looked at these designs and after completing the prayer said: Take this garment to Abu Jahm b. Hudhaifa and bring me a blanket for it has distracted me just now. *That you do not pray while food is present which you crave. For that in was narrated that Aisha (may Allah be please with her) said I have heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: No prayer can be (rightly said) when the food is there (before the worshipper) or when he is prompted by the call of nature.”)) and the call of nature means not hold urination and attempt to pray for indeed it’ll distract you in your prayers. *Not to pray while drowsy or sleepy. It was narrated from Anas: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ((If anyone of you feels drowsy while praying, he should sleep till he understands what he is saying (reciting). * Not to pray behind a talking or sleeping person. It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: ((“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade performing prayer behind one who is engaged in conversation or one who is sleeping.”)) * Not to be distracted by the removal of pebbles because it was narrated from Bukhari that: ((“They asked the prophet (peace be upon him) about the removal of (pebbles) in prayer, whereupon he said: If you do it, do it only once.”)) this hadith also reflects on preserving the serenity and humbleness during the prayer and not to move a lot while praying. * You should not trouble others when reciting the Quran. It was narrated Abu Said al-Khudri: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) retired to the mosque. He heard them (the people) reciting the Quran in a loud voice. He removed the curtain and said: every one of you is calling his Lord quietly. One should not trouble the other and one should not raise the voice in recitation or in prayer over the voice of the other. *Not to look around while praying. For indeed it was narrated that The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ((Allah (SWT) continues to look upon His slave while he is praying, so long as he does not turn away. If he turns his face away, He turns away from him.)) And the prophet was asked about turning around during the prayers, He replied, ((It is a way of stealing by which Satan takes away (a portion) from the prayer of a person.)) * Not to look or lift your sight to the sky. Because it was narrated that a man from among the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) told him that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: If any one of you in praying, let him not lift his gaze to the sky, or his eyesight will be taken away. *That you should not spit front of you. Abdullah b. Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saw spittle on the wall towards Qibla, and scratched it away and then turning to the people said: When any one of you prays, he must not spit in front of him, for Allah is in front of him when he is engaged in prayer. And also Abu hurairah said that the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) forbade putting hands on the waist during prayer. Abu Dawud said; The word Ikhtisar means to put one’s hands on one’s waist. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade three things: Pecking like a crow, resting ones forearms on the ground like a predator, and allocating the same place for prayer like a camel gets used to a certain place. Dear O’Muslims: these are what have been narrated which helps us to be humble during our prayers. And a reminder for all that we are in the month of Rajab in the Arabic calendar, and the prophet peace be upon him used to fast a lot during this month. So strive to obtain the deeds by fasting multiple days during this month. May Allah bless us with piety and purify our souls and help us perform all obligated prayers and make us humble. O Allah, we turn to you in repentance, put our hope and trust in you to guide us to do the righteous actions and accept our supplications to you.
