Dear friends and colleagues, We cordially invite you to the OIBs Open Garden: An Evening of Conversation and Academic Exchange! On Wednesday, December 3rd 2014, at 7 pm, the Institutes junior research fellows will host a social hour. We will get together in the relaxed atmosphere of the Institute to share ideas about academic and non-academic research, working in international institutions, arts and any project or topic you find worth discussing. Most of all, we are happy to open our doors for you and give you the chance to get to know the OIB. For this Wednesday we are happy to announce the screening of the Syrian documentary Al-Mash’ham directed by Saber Darwish. The film is in Arabic with English subtitles and its duration is 37 minutes. The screening will start at 7,30 pm in the OIBs library for those interested. Please bring your friends and feel free to forward this email. Almash’ham (The Mechanic Shop) is pseudonym for the place, where martyrs enshroud in Joubar neighborhood Eastern Damascus. Two families along with some men are living there; who are neither relatives nor friends, only knew each other through the revolution. Pastry-cook, Plumber, vegetative and carpenter turned into medical center activists, their duties divided between the frontlines, enshrouding casualties and bury them. Three days of living with them, hearing and watching their daily life struggles. It is a movie about group of people living and working hard together. It reflects the harsh and bitter life which Syrians are going through, as well as the steadfastness of the civil society. Directed by: Saber Darwish Saber Darwish: is a Syrian Journalist, studied in Damascus University. He directed some documentary movies. He also worked on covering events in Syria and as correspondent for several news T.V and Arabic Journals. الفلم الوثائقي المشحم هو الاسم الحركي المستعار لمكان تكفين الشهداء في حي جوبر شرقي العاصمة دمشق. تعيش فيه عائلتان وشباب عدة، لا تربطهم أية صلة قربى سوى الثورة. حلواني، خضرجي، معلم أدوات صحية، ونجار موبيليا، تحولوا إلى نقطة طبية تتوزع الأدوار بين الإسعاف على الجبهات، وبين غسل الموتى وتكفينهم ودفنهم. نعيش في الفيلم ثلاثة أيام معهم، نرى حياتهم، نسمع مجريات يومهم. يصور الفيلم مجموعة صغيرة من الناس يعملون ويعيشون في هذا المكان، ويعكس حقيقة الحياة اليومية القاسية والمريرة التي يعيشها السوريون، إلى جانب صمود المجتمع المدني. اخراج: صبر درويش انتاج: مركز شرارة آذار الاعلامي المخرج: صبر درويش، صحفي سوري، درس في كلية الاعلام في جامعة دمشق، له عدة أفلام وثائقية، وعمل على تغطية الأحداث في سوريا، عمل مراسلاً لعدة قنوات تلفزيونية وعدة صحف عربية Hope to see you on Wednesday!
