٩͡๏̯͡๏۶ Tuesday, 12 August 2014 From Bobby Nixon -Liberal Democrat Councillor for Holywell ! ● CHILDREN ! - Cost of raising a child rises faster than wages - New research from the Child Poverty Action Group has found that the cost of raising a child has climbed so sharply, that even families with both parents in work do not have enough money to live on. Families in which both parents earned the minimum wage were found to be 18% short of the estimated amount required to provide a minimum standard of living, an amount calculated through considering the cost of food, household items and childcare. The amount it costs to bring up a child has risen 8% for a couple, to £164.19 a week, and 11% for a single parent, at £184.50 per week, significantly outstripping wage growth. Between 2008 and 2014, the cost of childcare has risen 42%, more than twice the inflation rate. Out of work families on benefits were found to be the worst off, receiving only 57% of the income needed to meet their basic needs. Qualified youth workers are a vital part of our public services and provide real value to our communities,” comments Unison spokesperson Heather Wakefield.
