It explodes and spares no-one as another building is reduced to rubble seconds before the ceasefire. Israel’s merciless bombardment of the Palestinian homeland continued until the last moment before the temporary truce. It took another 40 lives – 18 from the same family – and pushed the Palestinian death toll towards 1,000. The dead in the last-minute attacks included 11 children, among them a one-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy. As silence fell on Gaza for the first time in 19 days, families poured into the streets to recover the bodies of loved ones. Women wailed and paramedics looked stunned as they grappled with scenes of devastation. Cars had been blown 160 feet into the air and landed on top of office buildings. Apartment blocks were split in half and districts left pulverised. Many of the photographs sent from the scene are too horrific to publish. Palestinians embraced friends and family not seen for days amid the rubble as Israeli tanks stood by. People searched through the debris for their belongings, packing blankets, furniture and clothes into taxis, trucks, rickshaws and donkey carts before fleeing. One witness said: “They have a brief window of opportunity to do as much as they can and then frankly get out of here.”
