Perspective Why I Stay Home on Election Day Miles Khan Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. But where do these politicians come from? They dont fall from the sky. They dont pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from Bangladeshi parents, Bangladeshi families, Bangladeshi homes, Bangladeshi schools, and they are elected by Bangladeshi citizens. This is the best we can do, folks. This is what we have to offer. This is what our system produces. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you are going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limit is not going to be any good, because you are just going to wind up with a brand new selfish, ignorant batch of dishonest politicians. Garbage in, garbage out. Maybe, its not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here. Like the public. Yeah, the public sucks. Theres a nice campaign slogan: The public sucks. If this is really the fault of politicians, then where are all the bright people of the country? Where are all the bright, intelligent, patriotic Bangladeshis to step in to save the nation, to lead the way? We dont have those people in the country. Everybody is busy either scratching their head, picking their nose, spitting where they eat and talking on their cell phone with people they hate. So I have solved this little political dilemma in a very simple way. On Election Day, I stay home. I dont vote. Screw them. I dont vote. Two reasons. First of all, its meaningless. This country was sold, bought and paid for a long time ago. The garbage they shuffle around every five years—dont mean a freaking thing. Theyve long bought, and paid for the parliament, city corporations, they got the lawmen in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies, so they control just about all of the news and information you get to read, hear or watch. They spend crores of Taka to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else. But Ill tell you what they dont want: They dont want smart citizens who can think critically. They dont want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. Thats against their interests. They dont want people who are smart enough to think about how badly theyre getting screwed by the system. They dont want that! You know what they want? They want people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork. And just dumb enough to passively accept everything. Secondly, I believe if you vote, you have no right to complain. People like to twist that around. They say, well, if you dont vote, you are not exercising your democratic right. But whats the logic in that? If you vote and elect dishonest, incompetent people, and they get in office and screw everything up, you are responsible for what they have done. You have contributed to causing the problem. You have voted them in. You have no right to complain. Advertisement I, on the other hand, who did not vote, who in fact, did not even leave the house on Election Day, am no way responsible for what these people have done and therefore, have every right to complain that you have created this mess that I had nothing to do with. So when the next election comes, go ahead and cast your vote. I am sure as soon as the election is over the country will improve immediately. As for me, I will be home on that day doing essentially the same thing as I always do—get fat drinking soda and eating chips.
