suni-ai parh parh paavahi maan. In Japuji sahib Guruji says by listening and reading honor is obtained. But to the contrary in Asa di vaar he targeted reading of books and says that you may read loads and loads of books of vast multitudes, you may read and read and fill pits with them, and you may read years after years, all your life with your every breath is useless babbling and idle talk in ego. parh parh gadee ladee-ah parh parh bharee-ah saath.parh parh bayrhee paa-ee-ai parh parh gadee-ah khaat. parhee-ah jaytay baras baras parhee-ah jaytay maas.parhee-ai jaytee aarjaa parhee-ah jaytay saas. What is the difference between these two reading and what actually is required of us? Actually these two readings are not different as mentioned in Japuji Sahib or Asa Di Vaar, message of Guruji is very clear, Guruji requires us to follow Waheguru/or His hukam and all our readings shall be based on teachings of the Guru. Further we should apply those teachings/virtues in our own lives. We should not read sacred texts under any obligation or just or for material or other gains. We should gain knowledge (gian) out of readings. As per Guruji only the fools, with deception in their hearts, read sacred texts to fill their bellies. andar kapat udar bharan kai taa-ee paath parheh gaavaaree. Therefore as per Guruji in order to obtain peace of mind and to renounce ego only reading is not sufficient but understanding the crux is also necessary. Practicing and applying virtues in our own lives can only be possible with the help of true Guru. parhay sunay ki-aa ho-ee. ja-o sahj na mili-o so-ee. We Sikhs usually pay for Akhand Paths (akhand = uninterrupted, without break; path = reading) in Gurdwaras and we assume just by paying money our moral obligation is met, but have we ever questioned ourselves, what we have learned out of it? Actually there is no flow of knowledge/understanding. This has just become a business like any other service industry. Where Gurdwaras are acting as business centers and the Pathees (persons reading the Path) are doing so just in order to fill his belly. Guruji strongly condemns this and shows us the real path to meet Waheguru. Therefore understanding the message of guru and then implementing that message in real life is the responsibility of every Sikh.
