They arrested 53 persons from Thanjavur, Kanchipuram and Tiruvannamalai and seized Rs 34 lakh worth spirits and liquor bottles, police said. The racket involved the supply of spuriously branded bottles of liquor to a number of Tasmac bars, including those operating in the Chennai suburbs of Pallavaram, Medaakkam and Pallikaranai. “We found that at least 22 Tasmac bars were receiving supplies through this racket and raided the bars attached to the Tasmac wine shops,” said S. N. Seshasai, inspector general of police, Prohibition Enforcement Wing. He said they had sent a report about this and the possible connivance of Tasmac employees to senior executives of Tasmac, which controls the supply of liquor to the wine shops in the state. According to the police, two kingpins, Anthony Raj and Raghu Prakash, from Bengaluru were among the 53 arrested. Another, Madhavan was also held. Two more men, Suresh and Vinod, are wanted in connection with the racket, which was operational for the last six months. Police seized as many 10,700 bottles, thousands of fake labels, fake holograms and caps from the arrested persons besides a huge quantity of rectified spirit. The racket was running ‘bottling units’ in Maraimalai Nagar near Chennai, Thanjavur and Tiruvannamalai. “The racketeers obtained rectified spirit from Bengaluru, while labels and holograms came from Mumbai. The bottles were procured locally from Tasmac bars. The illegal units were mixing spirit with water and colouring agents. They made fake liquor out of the premium brands of whisky, brandy and rum and offered this at a lower price to those running the Tasmac bars,” the police officer noted. deccanchronicle/130913/news-crime/article/interstate-liquor-racket-busted
