This foundation has a big ashram at the foothills of Velliangiri hills, at Coimbatore. All the lands adjacent to the Isha Asharam are forest lands under the control of Tamil Nadu Forest Department. The Isha Foundation is situated in an area of over forty six lakh square feet and the campus contains buildings over 8 lakh square feet. For the entire buildings and for the campus which is protected by electrical fencing, no permission was obtained either from the Town Planning authorities or the local Panchayat. In this regard, the Town and Country Planning department of Tamil Nadu on 05.11.2012, sent a stop work notice to the Isha Foundation to stop any further construction since there was no approval. However, the Isha group continued with the construction of the buildings. The Town and Country Planning Department sent a Lock and Sealing Notice to the Isha Foundation on 24.12.2012. But, the Isha Foundation never bothered about the Notices and continued with the further constructions. Since the government failed to take action on the illegal constructions of Isha Foundation, one M.Vetriselvan, an Advocate filed a Public Interest Litigation in the Madras HC, in WP No. 5885 of 2013 praying for a WRIT OF MANDAMUS to the concerned authorities to initiate action to demolish all the illegal constructions and the same is pending before the Honble High Court. In these circumstances, the Isha Foundation is undertaking a Mahasivarathri Festival which commences on 10th of February and concludes on 17th of February. Participants nearing a lakh are expected for this event and during the previous years also, large number of people took part in the event. Since the Isha Foundation buildings are unauthorised and facing demolition and the place which the event is to be held is a forest area, such congregation in large numbers would seriously disturb the wild life in that area. And the large number of vehicles which are expected for the event will pollute the area which is a dense forest. In these circumstances, I request your kind offices to intervene and take necessary action to prevent the event. In this connection I invite your kind attention to the order of the Honble Madras High Court in MP No. 1 of 2013 in WP No. 5885 of 2013 in M.Vetriselvan vs Union of India and 11 others wherein the Honble Court issued orders to consider a similar representation and ensure that there is no danger to human beings and wild animals.
