(Annals of Internal Medicine) XDDD Healthcare Workers Often Unaware of Whether Patients Have Central Venous Catheters By Kelly Young Edited by David G. Fairchild, MD, MPH, and Jaye Elizabeth Hefner, MD Approximately one in five healthcare workers may not be able to recall whether their patients have central venous catheters (CVCs), according to an Annals of Internal Medicine study. Nearly 1000 patients at three academic hospitals were interviewed, and in some cases examined, for the presence of a CVC. After morning rounds, healthcare providers were asked whether their patient had a CVC. For the 200 patients with CVCs, 21% of clinicians were not aware of the devices presence. Teaching physicians and hospitalists were more likely to be unaware of the CVC, compared with interns, residents, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants (27% vs. 16%). An editorialist writes: Even if, in theory, infection rates do not differ when the physician responsible for orchestrating care is unaware of the presence of a CVC ... it irks me that we would be comfortable being unaware that a dangerous implement we inserted into our patients body remains and might no longer be needed. annals.org/article.aspx?articleid=1916822
