繼續國際球迷大串連行動!!! A pro-Beijing Hong Kong politician insult the 96 victims. Dear LFC fans: Im a Hongkonger and a FC Barcelona socis who is actively involved in the ongoing Umbrella Revolution. Recently, an outrageous incident took place, which insulted your club and your anthem. The worst of all, 96 victims of Hillsborough tragedy. Id like to bring it to your attention. In the passing decade, the Hong Kong Police force have been increasingly affected by culture of impunity, abuse of power and police brutalities were commonplace. Recently, it run amok completely. On 15th October, at a Police suppression operation against the wild-cat occupation action at Lung Wo Road, the arterial road north of the Central Government Complex at Central, one protester, later identified as volunteer social worker and Civic Party member Ken Tsang, was carried into a secluded location with his hands tied behind his back. He was then punched, kicked and stamped on repeatedly by about six police officers in rotation. The beating lasted for about four minutes. The local television channel TVB filmed it with video clips being transmitted internationally and provoked outrage; Amnesty International called for the prosecution of the police officers involved. Hong Kongs secretary for security, Lai Tung-kwok, announced that the officers involved will be temporarily removed from their current duties. Reporters at the scene said that journalists were treated no differently to protesters. One reporter was allegedly grabbed, kicked and punched by police officers while ignoring his protestations that he was a journalist. (From Wikipedia) Here is an English translation of the Hong Kong LFC fans statement, which explain what happen next day (see also their action at the street that night): We, the Liverpool F.C. fans of Hong Kong, hereby strongly condemn the quoting of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” during the Legislative Council meeting on October 16, 2014 by Councillor Tam Yiu Chung, who is also Chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB, the largest pro-Beijing political party of HK), in support of the Hong Kong Police Forces recent behaviour. “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is not just any other English phrase – written as a show tune in 1945 by Messrs Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, it has since become the anthem of Borussia Dortmund, Celtic F.C., and of course Liverpool. Before every home game, fans of the teams will sing the anthem with great passion. While YNWA is not solely a Reds tradition, our association with YNWA is widely known in the football world. The Honourable Councillor Tam, however, seem to not know how our club’s emblem came to be printed with a representation of the Shankly Gates with the words “You’ll Never Walk Alone” above it. It is because if an event in the past that we cannot forget. The year is 1989. Councillor Tam has probably forgotten everything he said that year, but for us, history cannot – will not – be wiped away with the passage of time. April 15 of this year marks not only the death of Chinese leader Hu Yaobang (which trigger The Tiananmen Square protests), but also a great tragedy for us, one that we wish not to remember and dare not to forget. 96 of our brothers and sisters never returned from Hillsborough Stadium, and for 20 odd years, 96 families and our club endured unimaginable pain and injustice. Then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the South Yorkshire Police deliberately altered the investigation’s reports and covered-up details of the disaster, then blamed it on the 96 and us Liverpool fans. In 2012, our perseverance paid off. Justice was served, and PM Cameron made a public apology. The Hillsborough Independent Panel revealed the South Yorkshire Police altered 164 investigative reports, and 116 police testimonies were marked as significantly altered, the descriptions that didn’t favour the police were taken out. The police also didn’t conduct proper surveys of the stadium prior to the match, never revealed results of their internal investigations post-disaster, and handled evidences pertaining to post-mortem documentation and medical assistance controversially. Universal values know no boundaries and do not think for a second the despicable actions of British police forces has nothing to do with Hong Kong. Lately the Hong Kong Police clearly demonstrated how unchecked police power can destroy the reputation of what was once the finest police force in Asia. Protesters were roughly handled by officers, seven of whom were even filmed by TV crews to have carried an unarmed and non-resisting protester into a dark corner and beat him mercilessly. These images brought up our pain and fears from the past. And now, Councillor Tam used “You’ll never walk alone” in salutation to the HK Police. It is a grievous insult to us. We understand that Councillor Tam may not know that “You’ll never walk alone” became a strong reminder for us after Hillsborough to remember the 96, as well as how terrible is injustice coming from those who had sworn to uphold the law. Please, therefore, treasure the image HK Police has worked so hard to gain over the years, and please, do not hurt our memories and conscience with ignorance. We do not request an apology from Councillor Tam, for we understand that truth and conscience does not apply to some. *** Theres one powerful indictment the Kopites can do at upcoming home matches (22nd against Real Madrid, 25th against Hull City, and 28th Swansea City): Make a massive banner which write「民建聯最無恥!」(Which mean DAB is most shameless! The sound-bite came from here [7:51 onward, for the whole context see the whole clip]. Please use Traditional Chinese, NOT Simplified Chinese) and show it at the Kop, minor banners such as Shame on DAB!, Shame on Tam Yiu Chung!, Shame on HKSAR Government!, Shame on HK Police!, Support Hongkongers!, Support Umbrella Revolution! could also be made as demonstration. It will show live globally and other football club fans might fellow suit. The action should continue until Councillor Tam deliver a formal open apology toward your club, all the fans and the family members and friends of 96. LFC fans from Hong Kong and Hongkongers who fight for freedom, democracy, autonomy, and dignity will eternally appreciate if it can be done. Yours faithfully Jonathan Kan
