고2 능률(찬) Lesson 8 Travel and Festivals Festivals around the World Festivals are exciting, lively events that usually celebrate some unique aspect of the local culture. 축제는 보통 지역 문화의 어떤 독특한 면을 기리는 흥미롭고 활기가 넘치는 행사이다. Although each festival is different, people across the world tend to celebrate in similar ways. 비록 각각의 축제는 다르지만, 전 세계 사람들은 유사한 방식으로 기념하는 경향이 있다. During the festive season, people have fun by wearing fancy costumes, decorating their surroundings, and sharing special meals. 축제기간 동안, 사람들은 화려한 옷을 입고, 주변을 장식하고, 특별한 음식을 나누어 먹으면서 즐긴다. Festivals are held for many different reasons. 축제는 매우 다양한 이유로 열린다. Some celebrate a particular time of year or religious occasion; others celebrate special events in people’s lives. 어떤 것은 한 해의 특별한 시기나 종교적인 행사를 기리고, 다른 것은 사람의 일생에 있어 특별한 행사를 기린다. Springtime Festivals 봄철의 축제 Spring is the time of year when warm weather returns after the cold winter; the first flowers bloom, and birds begin to build nests and lay eggs. 봄은 추운 겨울이 지나고 따뜻한 날씨가 되돌아오는 시기로 처음으로 꽃이 피며, 새가 둥지를 짓고 알을 낳기 시작한다. With nature bursting into activity, it’s no surprise that people choose springtime more than any other season to celebrate new life and hope for the future. 자연이 활동을 시작하면서, 사람들이 새로운 삶과 미래에 대한 희망을 기리기 위해서 다른 계절이 아닌 봄을 선택하는 것은 놀라운 일이 아니다. Holi 홀리 When: March 시기: 3월 Where: India / Nepal 장소: 인도/네팔 Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates spring. The night before, people chase away evil spirits by lighting fires. The next day, they dress in old clothes and throw colored powder at one another. 홀리는 봄을 기리는 힌두교의 축제이다. 전날 밤에 사람들은 불울 밝힘으로써 악령을 쫓는다. 다음 날 그들은 헌옷을 입고 서로에게 색 가루를 뿌린다. Carnival 카니발 When: February to March 시기: 2월에서 3월 Where: Brazil, Italy etc. 장소: 브라질, 이탈리아 등 This festival usually involves wild street parades in which people dress up in handmade masks and fantastic costumes to dance in the streets. 이 축제는 거리에서 춤을 추기 위해 손으로 만든 가면을 쓰고 환상적인 의상을 입는 떠들썩한 거리 퍼레이드를 통상적으로 포함한다. “You have to see this before you die!” “죽기 전에 이것을 보아야 한다!” Date: February 22 Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Reporter: Jenny, from the U.S.A. It was so exciting to arrive in Rio — the city everyone talks about as being the most wonderful party place. I was lucky enough to be there for Carnival, one of the biggest festivals in the world. The best part of Carnival is the samba schools parade at the Sambadrome. The Sambadrome is a huge building that holds 50,000 people. The parade is a contest between fourteen different samba schools, each with its own songs, traditions, and crazy fans! The parade began at 9 p.m. and didn’t finish until 6 a.m.! Each samba school had THOUSANDS of people, all dressed in the most fantastic, beautiful costumes and masks. All around me, I saw fans dancing and cheering. The beat of the samba made me dance, too! We watched the parade until about 3 a.m., when I felt really tired and started falling asleep. But it was a wonderful experience. I definitely recommend the Rio Carnival! 모든 사람들이 가장 훌륭한 파티 장소라고 말하는 도시인 리우에 도착하게 되어 매우 신났다. 나는 운 좋게도 세계에서 가장 큰 축제 중 하나인 카니발을 볼 수 있는 곳에 있었다. 카니발에서 가장 마음에 드는 부분은 삼바드롬에서 열리는 삼바 학교 퍼레이드이다. 삼바드롬은 5만 명을 수용하는 커다란 건물이다. 퍼레이드는 각자의 노래, 전통 그리고 열광적인 팬들이 있는 14개의 서로 다른 삼바학교 사이의 경연이다! 퍼레이드는 저녁 9시에 시작해서 새벽 6시가 되어서야 비로소 끝났다! 각 삼바 학교에는 최고로 멋지고 아름다운 의상과 가면으로 치장한 수천 명의 사람들이 있었다. 주변에서 나는 팬들이 춤우고 환호하는 것을 보았다. 삼바의 박자는 나 역시 춤을 추게 했다! 우리는 약 새벽 3시까지 퍼레이드를 보았는데, 그때 나는 정말 피곤해서 졸기 시작했다. 그러나 이것은 멋진 경함이었다. 나는 리우 카니발을 정말로 추천한다! Special Events in People’s Lives 사람들의 일생에서의 특별한 행사 There are many events to celebrate during a person’s life, and some of the more common celebrations around the world include birthdays, marriages, and ancestor-remembrance. Most of these festivals are happy events that allow family and friends to get together, but people mark these special days differently in different places. 일생동안 축하해야 할 행사에는 여러 가지가 있으며, 전 세계적으로 매우 보편적인 기념일 중 몇몇은 생일, 결혼, 그리고 조상 추모를 포함한다. 이러한 축제 중 대부분은 가족과 친구들을 함께 모이게 하는 행복한 행사이지만, 사람들은 이 특별한 날을 다른 장소에서 다르게 보낸다. p.191 Oktoberfest 옥토버페스트 When: September to October 시기: 9월에서 10월 Where: Germany 장소: 독일 Oktoberfest began when the King of Bavaria had a big wedding that lasted eight days and was attended by many people. These days, it’s a big celebration held every year in Munich, Germany. 옥토버페스트는 바바리아의 왕이 8일 동안 계속되어 많은 사람들이 참석한 성대한 결혼식을 거행하면서 시작되었다. 오늘날은 독일 뮌헨에서 매년 열리는 성대한 축제이다. Halloween 할로윈 When: October 시기: 10월 Where: U.S.A. / Europe 장소: 미국/ 유럽 Halloween was originally a day when ancient Europeans remembered dead ancestors. These days, people celebrate by carving pumpkins and dressing up in scary costumes. 할로윈은 원래 고대 유럽인들이 죽은 조상을 추모하는 날이었다. 오늘날 사람들은 호박을 조각하고 으시시한 의상을 입고서 기념한다. Halloween is the perfect time to visit New York! “할로윈은 뉴욕을 방문하기에 완벽한 시기이다!” Date: October 31 Location: New York, the U.S.A. Reporter: Hyejin, from Korea It’s Halloween in New York, and people here sure know how to celebrate it! Costume parties are thrown all month, and glowing jack-o’-lanterns can be seen everywhere. On Halloween night, I went down to the parade on 6th Avenue. As I came out of the subway, I saw the parade passing by. First came the band, costumed musicians banging drums and blowing trumpets, followed by a sea of “flying bats” on sticks and skeleton puppets. Then came thousands of people showing off their costumes. The crowd had a great time as they cheered for their favorite ones. I saw people dressed up as popular movie characters, such as Shrek, Dracula, and Spiderman. It was totally fantastic and amusing. I wished that I had dressed up, too. Halloween in New York was even more exciting than I had imagined! 뉴욕의 할로윈, 이곳 사람들은 이날을 어떻게 기념해야 하는지 확실히 알고 있다! 분장 파티는 한 달 내내 열리고, 빛을 내는 호박등은 어디서나 볼 수 있다. 할로윈 밤에 나는 6번 가의 퍼레이드 쪽으로 갔다. 지하철에서 나오면서 나는 퍼레이드가 지나가는 것을 보았다. 제일 먼저 의상을 차려입고서 드럼을 치고 트럼펫을 부는 음악가들의 밴드가 오고, 막대기에 ‘날아다는 박쥐’를 매단 무리와 해골 모양의 꼭두각시떼들이 뒤를 따랐다. 그 뒤로 분장을 뽐내는 수천 명의 사람들이 이어졌다. 군중들은 자신들이 좋아하는 분장을 보고 환호하면서 즐거운 시간을 보냈다. 나는 슈렉, 드라큘라 그리고 스파이더맨과 같은 인기 있는 영화 캐릭터로 분장한 사람들을 보았다. 그것은 정말 멋지고 재미있었다. 나도 분장을 했더라면 좋았을 텐데. 뉴욕의 할로윈은 상상했던 것보다 훨씬 더 신이 났다! p.192 Festivals of Light 빛의 축제 Light has different meanings related to the religious or cultural background of different countries. It has come to be an important element in many festivals throughout the world. During festivals held in winter, people often celebrate by lighting candles and brightening their houses with colorful decorations. 빛은 여러 나라에서 종교적 또는 문화적 배경과 관련된 서로 다른 의미를 가지고 있다. 그것은 전 세계의 여러 축제에서 중요한 요소가 되었다. 겨울에 열리는 축제 기간에 사람들은 종종 촛불을 켜고 화려한 장식으로 집을 밝힘으로써 기념한다. According to legend, after winning a battle, the Jews lit a temple lamp with a small amount of oil, which was enough for only one day. The lamp, however, burned for eight days. Today, a candle is lit for each of the festival’s eight days. 하누카는 유대인의 빛 축제이다. 전설에 따르면 전쟁에서 이긴 후, 유대인들이 적은 양의 기름으로 신전의 등불을 켰는데, 그 양은 하루 동안만 충분할 정도였다고 한다. 그러나 그 등불은 8일 동안 탔다. 오늘날은 이 축제 기간인 8일 동안 매일 양초를 켠다. Today was St. Lucia’s Day, a very popular occasion. 오늘은 매우 인기 있는 행사인 성 루시아의 날이었다. The whole day, people celebrate St. Lucia, the saint of light. As I made my way through the snowy streets to the concert hall, Lucia buns were being served in the crowded town square. 눈이 내린 거리를 따라 음악회장으로 가는데, 사람들로 붐비는 도심의 광장에서 루시아 빵을 나눠주고 있었다. During the concert, St. Lucia entered with candles, a sign of hope during the dark winter. 음악회 도중 성 루시아는 어두운 겨우내 희망의 상징인 양초를 가지고 들어 왔다. One and a half hours of songs were performed in her honor. 그녀에게 경의를 표하기 위해 한 시간 반 정도 노래 공연이 있었다. Now, three hours after the concert, the beautiful music is still playing in my mind. From Holi to Halloween to Hanukkah, festivals provide opportunities for visitors to gain and develop a better understanding of the world and its cultural diversity. 홀리부터 할로윈과 하누카에 이르기까지 축제는 방문객들에게 세상과 그 문화적 다양성을 더 잘 이해할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. As celebrations of the important seasons and events that shape human lives, festivals remind us of those characteristics which are shared across all cultures. 인간의 삶을 형성하는 중요한 시기와 행사를 기리는 의식으로서 축제는 우리에게 전 문화권에 걸쳐 공유되는 그러한 특징들을 상기시켜준다. By celebrating these common characteristics, we take a step closer to becoming a true global community. 이런 보편적인 특징들을 기림으로써, 우리는 진정한 국제 공동체가 되는 데 한 걸음 더 가까워진다.
