Jupiter, however, escaped this fate, and when grown up espoused Metis(Prudence), who administered a draught to Saturn which caused him to disgorge his children. Jupiter, with his brothers and sisters, now rebelled against their father Saturn and his brothers the Titans; vanquished them, and imprisoned some of them in Tartarus, inflicting other penalties on others. Atlas was condemned to bear up the heavens on his shoulders. On the dethronement of Saturn, Jupiter with his brothers Neptune(Poseidon) and Pluto(Hades) divided his dominions. Jupiter’s portion was the heavens, Neptune’s the ocean, and Pluto’s the realms of the dead. Earth and Olympus were common property. Jupiter was king of gods and men. The thunder was his weapon, and he bore a shield called Aegis, made for him by Vulcan(Hephaestos). Chaos(혼돈) 상태에서 분리된 하늘의 신 Uranus와 대지의 여신 Gaea는 Titans(거신족) 12남매와 거대 외눈박이 Cyclops 3형제, 팔이 100개 달린 거인 Hekatonkheires 3형제를 낳는데, Titans 중 시간의 신 Cronus는 어머니 Gaea가 만들어준 낫을 들고 아버지 Uranus를 castrating(거세)시킨 뒤 권력을 잡게 됩니다. Cronus는 누이이자 아내인 Rhea와 결혼해 아이들이 태어나자마자 삼켜 버리는 고약한 버릇을 갖고 있었죠. 그 아이들 중 Zeus는 할머니 Gaea와 어머니 Rhea의 도움으로 용케 그 운명을 피해 살아남아 산의 요정 아말테이아의 보살핌으로 잘 자라게 됩니다.
