The public is invited. What: Barrio Sustainability & Climate Justice Event When: Saturday, September 20, 2014, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Where: Wakefield Middle School – 101 W. 44th St (6th Ave/44th St) We have a moral obligation to protect our children and future generations from the effects of climate change by addressing its causes and impacts – especially for our most vulnerable. Climate change poses serious threats to the Latino community, endangering the health and livelihood of the Latino community in Arizona. With climate change comes increased ozone pollution that worsen air quality in Latino communities already struggling with disproportionately high asthma rates. One in every ten Hispanic children in the US are living with asthma, and are 40% more likely to die of the chronic condition. Limiting carbon pollution from heavy polluters is one of the best actions we can take to curb these deadly impacts and improve the overall health and wellbeing of the Latino community. The overall goal of this event is to demonstrate that the Latino community is willing to do its part to conserve energy and curb carbon at the residential level, and that our community stands in solidarity with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan. The community will come together the morning of Saturday (9/20) to learn, engage, and demand that our children are protected from the real world impacts of climate change. The event will engage Latino residents through an environmental resource fair, workshops on energy conservation, energy wise kit giveaways, and the celebration of barrio sustainability. Founded in 2001, TYLO- (translates to land and freedom organization) is a grassroots organization based out of Tucson, Arizona, that promotes positive social change and a respect for land, people, and culture. TYLO focuses on building multiple examples of positive social change and community transformation in the barrios where members live or grew up in. This community event has been made possible through a partnership between TYLO and Green for All. ###
