05/02/14 We played a really fun game in class today! We were assigned partners, and we each had to write a bit of dialogue to go along with the other person. The game focused on the correct use of inflection and how to detect that. I really enjoyed working with my partner! We had a great time making up a scenario, and its always fun to be a little over-dramatic! We also worked on adverbs, and Ill elaborate in my post in Language Study! Eva and I took our coffee break together, and I got a delicious claffouti tart with cherries and sweet custard in the middle! It was quite possibly one of the most delicious things I have ever experienced. Definitely the highlight of my day, however, has to be the live radio show I went to! Antoine, Gabrielle, my mother and I all met Vallis, the hosts, husband Pierre at Radio France. It was really lovely to see my mom after not being together for a while! She is doing well. Shes happy, and I think that she is very glad to be here. Im glad I could be here with her. Of course it would be fun to come with or without her, and the same if she came here alone, but we are having a lot of fun spending time together and meeting up different places. I am very excited to go to some art museums with her in the future! Anyway, we were brought into the studio. Its essentially a small auditorium with a stage, an interview couch, and a sound booth above. We sat in the absolute front row, mere feet from the performers! There were three different groups there: Bosco Delrey, Anthony Joseph, and of course, Broken Bells! The groups would play a couple songs, and then they would be interviewed by our friend Valli! All of the groups were either British or American and did not speak much french. There was a translator, and Valli is also American and would help the artists understand the questions. It was interesting to listen them all talk about their craft and the process in which they create their music. The first group, Bosco Delrey, have a rebel rock-ish sound with a bit of the Bee Gees or the Beach Boys. It was a different sound. Not exactly my favorite, but it provided a nice variety to the sound. The next performer, Anthony Joseph, is a poet, novelist, musician and lecturer. His lyrics were absolutely beautiful and I sincerely recommend him to anyone interested in spoken word. I enjoyed listening to him speak about his music as well, and its obvious that he is a very creative and passionate person. While the other artists were performing, I could see James Mercer and Danger Mouse through the window in the sound booth. It was a very exciting experience to be in the presence of musicians who I respect so much. Its very easy nowadays to become used to perfect sounding voices, what with auto-tune and overproduction; however, it is a different experience entirely to hear the music live and really see how talented people can be. Danger Mouse is such a versatile musician. He played bass on one song, drums on another song and keyboard on another! It was really interesting to see him excel in all these different mediums. James Mercer is a transcendent performer, and his voice is incredible in person. You might think that they tweak his voice in the studio to make his pitch more exact, but that is absolutely not true. I have a lot of respect for people who dont mask their flaws with technology and dont try to appeal to a certain audience or put their sound in a marketing box. My mom and I were most definitely fan-girling over James the entire time. Im so glad I was able to experience this with her! It was a really wonderful experience, and Im so grateful to Gabrielle, Antoine, Pierre and Valli for their generosity and generous spirits. Im very fortunate to be in such a fantastic environment with exciting and interesting people! I couldnt have hoped for a better outcome with this trip. What a lovely life this is. Sophie
