05.31.13_FOOD FOR THOUGHT “Missed Opportunities” “A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds. “ ~Francis Bacon, Essays, 1625 ”Opportunities are never lost; someone will take the one you miss. “ ~Author Unknown By Dr. M.H. Salahshurian, Ph. D Romans 13:11-12 “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.” “The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.” As a wise man of old said it well, “I don’t know anything about luck. I have never banked on it, and I’m afraid of people who do. Luck to me is something else. Hard work and realizing what opportunity is, is completely a different thing.” When it comes to seizing opportunities serving the Lord, the Apostle Paul, in Romans 13:11-12, reminds us to take a lesson from the business world! It seems when it comes to seizing opportunities for collecting the temporal or worldly possession, which is temporary, the children of this world are wiser than we are! Even the Lord Jesus pointed that out in Luke 16:8 when He commended the unjust steward. Luke 16:8, “And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.” That brings to mind this real, true life story of Steve Jobs, chairman of Apple Computer, when he was alive and John Sculley, executive director of Pepsico. When Jobs met Sculley at Sculley’s penthouse office, Jobs straight forward asked him, “What would it take for you to leave Pepsico and come to work for Apple Computer?” Sculley was even more blunt and straight forward. “You’d have to give me a million-dollar salary, a million-dollar bonus and a million-dollar severance.” Jobs was shocked, yet he agreed. But even at that, Sculley was only agreeing to it providing that he could do the consulting from his New York office without having to move to California. At this point, Jobs had all he could take and answered Sculley with, “Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugar water or do you want to change the world?” Sculley later confessed saying this about Jobs’ statement, “It knocked the wind out of me!” It seems Sculley had become so obsessed with his security at Pepsico that he had missed opportunities to do something more for humanity. If promoting and selling sugar water was worth more than a million dollars to someone, how much more spreading the Gospel of Christ should mean to us! It is not “luck” we need to be looking for, but the “opportunities” of a lifetime which can never be repeated! Matthew 28:18-20. 28:18 “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” theswordandshield
