1) Attitude – it’s the writer William James who’s always been quoted for having said “Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.” This has become a classic admonition to every one who can choose to stay the way they are now, or choose to change their total outlook with themselves by altering, even for a bit, their attitudes. This attitude refers most especially to one’s perception of oneself versus that of others, and the universe in general. 2) Upbringing and background – a more loving, supporting, and accepting family that has been consistently around since birth or even in early childhood years will have strong influences in shaping the level of self confidence one may possess. Having not possessed such in earlier phases in life may be substituted by actively forming a reliable support group made up of the best coaches, mentors, and followers – they don’t have to be “real persons” as you may encounter most of them from vicarious means, i.e. reading books, learning from mistakes of others, or being inspired by positive role models. 3) Social skills – the skills one possesses when relating on different levels with diverse group of individuals will have an impact on that person’s level of self confidence. We all just have to observe first hand individuals in our respective network, who are able to navigate smoothly, seamlessly from one situation with a person to that of another mostly at a blink of an eye – such ability will have bearing on those persons’ “self confidence.” As such, overcoming issues on dealing with others, which process starts in being confident or having strong belief in oneself, will help that person to display a high level of self-confidence. 4) Ability to earn living means mainly through one’s efforts – being able to provide for one’s own material needs and wants will also make a person more self-confident, than someone who depends mainly on the direct support of others. A direct result of this will also allow a person to become self-reliant, a trait mostly observed with individuals with high level of self-confidence. 5) Knowledge of self – A Socratic-admonition, this is an ever-present area where anyone can learn a thing or two every day. The more a person is able to predict with certainty his / her thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors towards events, people and places, the higher the level of self confidence that person will possess. 6) Openness to learning and change – individuals who embrace change openly (and see change as a life constant and not doing “changes” just for the sake of change), and who spend valuable time pondering on every day life lessons (even from their own mistakes) have been observed to possess higher levels of self confidence. They’ve always known, through experience, that they can’t control every aspect of life, and they have open attitude towards “continuing education” (outside of formal schooling) as a lifelong pursuit. 7) Good health – this factor allows the person to view situations in life mostly as “opportunities,” as [s]he can seize them in mind, and take action to realize their perceived promise and potential. Good health will provide for an active mind, a more vigorous source of physical strength, and well-coordinated body movements—all such qualities lead to a higher level of confidence. Depending on your perspective, you may discover a host of other factors from studies made by academicians and social scientists. Studying and knowing these factors will enable you, like most regular folks, to improve self confidence. A proper mix of these factors, which can be learned, by and large, by taking action on your plans, and by being responsible for your self, will in turn boost your level of self confidence.
