(1 CORINTHIANS) Corinth was a wealthy prosperous center of commerce and trade when Paul wrote this letter. Morally, however, it was bankrupt. The term Corinthian came to be synonymous with immorality.and there,in the center of this immoral society, was a young Christian church struggling to survive. Pauls words to the Corinthians are exceptionally modern in their relevance to churches of today. The problems that surfaced in the congregation in corinth are the same problems that have plagued churches throughout the ages. There were divisions, questions about marriage and divorce, concerns about how to relate to a pagan world, lawsuits and immorality-difficult issues no one wanted to deal with. Paul addresses these head on, giving specific advice advice about how to live as Gods people in a fallen world. Nothing ever really changes where human nature is concerned, but Paul reminds us that we are not subjects to the whims of that nature. He points us to the resurrection when we will be changed, clothed with immortality and bearing the likeness of Christ. He reminds us that our lives are to be lived not for this world but in preparation for that imperishable world that is to come.
