Alright folks I made a post last night and got some likes, but as long as one person says they learned something and benefited from it than its worth the time. This particular post is about Meta in terms of League of Legends. Now Meta is a really REALLY ambiguous term and though Im a bit of a history buff I havent been able to track down the origins of the term, but I am rather partial to the idea that for LoL its used as an acronym to mean Most Efficient Tactics Available. The key to this is that it sets a time frame. It implies that only thing it is examining is the now. And its very ambiguous because tactics (which btw is really misused word for video games but essentially strategy and tactics are used interchangeably ) but the important is how wide and ambiguous something like that is. Im going to break League down into several factors here, and though Im sure Ill be leaving something out, the idea is to explore how the meta manifest itself and is effected over time 1.Individual Player mechanics (or Micro). This is one of the craziest storms you could ever peer into. Did you know something as simple as nerfing a percent health damage from 8 to 7% could radically change where you stand, how much creep you should be able to get, and literally which trades you should opt into. It is all mathematically based and is definable. Which means that it can be determined and be classified as meta. 2. Map control (Macro). Ideally everything about the map, rotations, warding, when to group when not to, is all determined by the most efficient tactics available, simply because inefficient things over time make you lose. 3. Metagaming. Metagaming is basically anything out of game that allows you to make in game decisions. For instance, if youre fighting a European team that picked aatrox twice in a row, and you decide to ban him, it would be within the meta to dedicate that ban because it is efficient to get rid of any teams comfort picks. In fact, if you have two champions that fill a niche and one is just slightly weaker than the other, but never seen, it might be more meta simply because its efficient to pick things people arent aware of how to play against. Renekton was a really good example of this. These things are all VERY general, but thats because at the end of the day meta as a term is a general concept that manifest itself in exact ways. There is definitely room for disagreements about what is the most Efficient, but the meta is always whats best. What actually is best, and not what actually is meta, is what most people are actually arguing over when they discuss it. Essentially, what wins the most amount of games is what Meta is. If you pick outside it, you are simply giving up a few wins. Thats all.
