1 DIV CENTENARY Brisbane A century of honour and sacrifice by soldiers of the Army’s 1st Division was acknowledged on Friday in a moving twilight ceremonial event at Brisbane’s Gallipoli Barracks. Raised to honour the commitment Australia made to Great Britain to provide some 20,000 soldiers for the fight against Germany, the 1st Division departed Australia on 1 November 1914 and conducted the initial landing at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915. The Headquarters 1st Division has since participated in every major war, peacekeeping and humanitarian operation involving the Australian Defence Force.
