1. Dont you love the KKK costume? I know I did. 2. Clearly, there was a conflation of African and African American themed costumes. Said distinction was not made in her explanation. 3. Clearly, she has also never taken a history class, for if she had, she would have realized instantly that these depictions (ie black face, animal costumes, ethnic headgear which I really mean to say that African=Native American=ethnic=homogenization of cultural minorities) are inherently racist, because they stem from a history of racial violence, racial injustice, and racial domination/subordination. These were images used to justify Africans and African Americans social subordination and perceived inferiority by painting them (pun intended) to be uncivilized, uncouth, and different than white people. 4. I love how she justifies her racism by saying that she dressed up as Cleopatra and that she wants to teach English in Cambodia and Africa, if [they] will still have [her]. I think its safe to say that no, her racialized paternalism and blatant cultural domination will not be accepted. 5. I am 100% sure that parties would be held that would be ‘Australian themed’ or American themed or even countries of the world, and in that instance I don’t believe anyone would be offended. People wear oktoberfest cotumes to parties and no one cracks it that they are not German?--ANSWER: the reason this is socially acceptable and not offensive is because being European or American (aka being white) is not offensive, because it is the dominant group. So she is right. There is a 100% chance that no one will find dressing up in Oktoberfest costumes to be offensive, because it is socially acceptable, even socially expected, that people want to dress up/become white people--because they hold all the power. Who wouldnt want that? 6. Not INTENDING to be racist is not the same as being a good person. This is part of the problem. When people refuse to see fault in their action or refuse to realize their subconscious racism, they are still perpetuating racism and white supremacy.
