1 . Largest Tree The largest tree in the world is the giant sequoia. Giant sequoias can grow as tall as 270 feet and their trunk diameter can reach as much as 50 feet across. The largest individual giant sequoia alive today, referred to as General Sherman, is estimated to be more than 2,100 years old and is thought to weigh as much as 2.7 million pounds, making it not only the largest individual tree, but also the largest living organism by volume. Giant sequoias have a native range that includes the western Sierra Nevada in California. They grow at elevations between 2900 and 8900 feet in mixed montane coniferous forests. Giant sequoias are one of three redwood species. The other redwood species include the dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) and the coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens).
