10 Energy saving tips As a general rule of thumb, “If you’re not using it, switch it off”. Geysers: “Switch off geysers between 06:00-22:00, reduce thermostat to 60 degrees, insulate geyser and water pipes and replace geysers with solar water heaters using Eskom’s rebate programme.” (From the Eskom website) Lighting: Buy energy-efficient lightbulbs. Compact Flourescent Lightbulbs (CFL’s) use 80% less electricity and last up to 8 times longer. Switch of lights in unused rooms. Appliances: Physically turn off appliances at the wall switch instead of leaving them on standby and where possible, use energy-efficient appliances. Bathing: Don’t stand under the shower for ages unnecessarily and switch to a energy-efficient shower head. Room temperature control: Rather than switching on the aircon, open up the windows and allow cool air to circulate instead. When using an aircon, keep the temperature between 18-22 degrees. Insulate ceilings to keep cool in summer and warm in winter. Cooking: Keep the oven door closed throughout and rather use the oven light to check on the food as every time you open the door, the temperature drops and you consume more energy to bring the temperature back up again. Washing: Cold water short wash cycles and rinse-only cycles on dishwashers and washing machines are designed to conserve energy and water. Washing: Weather permitting, hang your clothes out to dry rather than using a tumble dryer. Computers: Switch off your monitors and PC’s overnight and leave your printer on standby.
