10 March 2014 Press Release GREG MELLOR IN THE DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT AT DECOREX CAPE TOWN The spirit of global travel and a nostalgia for the exotic adventures of early explorers is one of the leading décor trends at the moment. The taste for something out of the ordinary can be seen in both décor and design trends, with retail spaces even starting to create more of a museum effect than a store front when it comes to merchandising. Cape Town interior designer Greg Mellor says it is this layering and a collection of personal objets, together with block printed fabrics that has inspired the installation he will create at Decorex Cape Town in April. Greg is collaborating with fabric house St Leger & Viney to curate and design the space that he has been invited to be in the prestigious “Decorex Designer Spotlight” for this year’s exhibition. Decorex Cape Town takes place at the CTICC from 25-28. “I will be creating a lush, tented Anglo-Indian bedroom, complete with a four poster bed from Private Collection, plenty of plants and books – all brought together by beautiful block printed paisley fabrics from the Union Castle Collection supplied by St Leger and Viney,” says Greg. Marc Shotland of St Leger & Viney says the Spice Island print that Greg has selected is reminiscent of the English influence in the colonies that developed along the spice trade routes. The strong cultural influence of the locals is evident in the interpretation of this classic English design, he says. Marc added that the layered, handmade look is a growing trend in interiors and anticipated an increasing interest in bespoke fabrics and a move away from digital prints. “The handmade look makes for a more personal style of interior. We’re all trying to move away from the factory-made look and I believe the Decorex Cape Town audience will love what they will see.” Greg is intrigued by the Indian revival that is taking place in South Africa and how many people were exploring India, not only in travel but in their décor styles too. “There’s generally a lot of interest in travel at the moment and this inspires the layered look with objects that reflect something of the person living in that space,” he says. Greg says he has recently started inviting his clients to add the final layer to his design projects themselves, saying it is important that a personal space holds the owner’s signature style. “Most of my clients are scared as they have retained my services because they want a finished product. However, there’s a serious chance of that finished product being really boring if they don’t add their own personality.” Greg, who lives in Tamboerskloof, describes his personal décor style as “not too serious”: “It’s all about creating a pleasant environment in which to have fun. If you don’t succeed in achieving that, then what’s the point?” His maxim is that all interiors should incorporate an element of humour, often meaning the addition of little quirks give his work their unique character and allow his client’s individuality to shine through. A native South African, Greg has himself travelled the world extensively and after living and working in both Sydney and London, returned to South Africa three years ago and is currently making his mark in Cape Town.
