10 years ago Afghanistans maternal mortality rate was one of the highest in the world. For every 100,000 live births, some 1,600 women died from causes related to pregnancy or childbirth. Thanks to a concerted effort by aid and development agencies that has been reduced to 400 deaths per 100,000 live births. Still extremely high, but an improvement. Mahbobas Promise also takes seriously the critical need to reduce the number of unnecessary maternal deaths. Last year we were able to send a number of young women on mid-wifery courses in both Panjshir and Badakhshan.
