100 Movies, Movie 5 - Airplane! (1980) - The crew of a plane filled with bizarre characters takes ill and the plane will crash. The only chance the souls on board have is an ex-pilot, Ted Striker, who is terrified to fly. Airplane! is widely considered one of the funniest movies of all time. Its greatest achievement isnt simply how funny it is, but how often, how consistently, and in how many different ways. The jokes range from in-your-face to not-notice-until-tenth-viewing. They are visual, vocal, situational. The laughs come from pop culture references (from the 70s, mostly), from puns, from punchlines and just about anything else. Everything is funny, even things that seem inconsequential turn out to be some kind of extremely in-depth joke that went way over your head upon a bit of research. In a movie so absolutely packed with comedy, youd expect a gag or two to fall short, and the thing that makes Airplane! the best, is that they somehow manage to all come up aces.
