12/22/2014 “Smart” ultrasound at Imola Hospital – thanks to Sacmi. Sacmi celebrates its 95th anniversary with a major donation to the local community. Three ultrasound scanners have been purchased, two of which are portable, for the geriatric, long-term care and nephrology wards. In the lead-up to Christmas and as part of the celebrations marking the 95th anniversary of the cooperative’s founding,Sacmi has decided to pay homage to the community that is its home by making a significant donation to the Imola Local Health Authority. Thanks to Sacmi’s contribution, two “smartphone” portable ultrasound scanners have been purchased for the geriatric and long-term care wards. A third, larger unit with a colour Doppler module is, instead, to be used in the nephrology and dialysis ward. The equipment - delivered on 22nd December – once again underlines Sacmi’s mission of extending a helping hand by, every year, making a charitable donation either locally, in Imola, or in other parts of the world where Sacmi does business. This mission is also incorporated into daily decision-making as highlighted by the focus on employment and skills and mutually rewarding relations with partners, customers and suppliers. In this case, Sacmi’s donation provides Imola with equipment vital to the wellbeing of the local community. It will ensure compliance with modern guidelines set out by Internal Medicine, which view ultrasound as an essential diagnostic tool that plays a key role when it comes to deciding whether surgery is required. The importance of being able to carry out ultrasound examinations “in bed”, points out the Local Health Authority in a thank-you letter to Sacmi, is now universally acknowledged “and is an extremely useful aid during in-ward physical examinations”. Ultrasound investigation – done with innovative smartphone-sized devices – thus becomes an essential tool for assessing a wide range of common pathologies, from kidney stones to thromboses, from pleural effusion to aortic aneurisms. An extremely useful procedure, ”in bed” ultrasound becomes indispensible where patients cannot be transported, as is often the case on geriatric and long-term care wards.
