15) To fight a counterinsurgency war with the Islamic State (IS) - TopicsExpress

15) To fight a counterinsurgency war with the Islamic State (IS) inside Iraq and (especially) Syria, will take 8 years just to catch up to where they are now. And, when you consider they have doubled their recourses in the past three months alone, it is clear our linear efforts could never bridge the gaps with their exponential growth. Insurgency is their game, not ours. They have been installing revolutionary cells and support structures amongst the people of Iraq since 2003, and the people of Syria since 2011. They are the masters of ideological indoctrination and conversion, not us. Even if we tried, nobody would fall for it. I realize the concept of having others fight our wars and protect our national interests is very appealing, but is completely unrealistic. Instead, we will continue to waste valuable time, allowing our enemies to grow stronger and become more threatening. Gradual escalation cannot get the job done. It did not work well in Vietnam and it will not work here. The U.S. military is the best in the world – hands down. In the Battle for Hue, during the Tet Offensive, in 1968, we were out numbered ten to one. Within one month, we had killed nearly 10,000 communist troops and had taken back the City. The United State’s competitive advantage is the ability to apply massive military superiority to the fight, and that is what we should do. If they have 35,000 troops on the ground, we should apply 100,000 of our own. When added with the 200,000 Iraqi troops there, that would give us nearly 110,000 troops total, which is more than enough. If the Islamic State poses a direct threat to the United States, and we wish to protect ourselves, we must get the job done now, and done quickly. Each day we wait will only costs more American lives later.
