16th august,1980..The day that shook the football lovers of India..That was a day when Kolkata was victim to a shocking and a ghastly incident.. That was an Kolkata derby between East Bengan and Mohun Bagan..Fans from both the club gathered into the stadium(Eden Garden),waiting for the game to unraval..Minutes into the match the crowd was witnessed to an spat between rival players Bidesh Bose and Dilip Palit.Soon both were given red card at 57th minute.The fury spread from field to stands.Pandemonium spread through the entire Eden Garden.Fans started clashing with rival team fans and the stadium soon turned into a muggy battlefield.. Lack of proper police protection cause serve physical damage of people.Moreover stampede was the cause of the damages more than rioting and violence.Police report claim the number of death due to rioting to be around 16.. In memoriam the football faternity of Kolkata observes "Football Lovers Day" on the 16th august every year..
